English 1101 is a course in prose writing. The purpose of this course is to help you become better prepared for college writing and reading. You will begin to look at writing as a process, which involves
pre-writing, drafting, giving and receiving feedback, revising and editing. You will also learn to better understand and appreciate the writings of others, as you practice critical, or analytical, reading. During the course of the semester, we will also work on developing thesis statements, using appropriate
rhetorical strategies for various purposes and audiences, review the conventions of standard written English, practice summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting, learn to document sources and conduct research, and write an argumentative research essay. [This course is concurrent and will cover grade 12 secondary writing standards.] College grade will be by semester. High school grades will

Tues. Oct 8 Quiz (30 points)—phrases and clauses; read “A Death in Texas” p. 181 and “Black Hair” p.190. In a journal analysis first examine and discuss the effectiveness of these narratives and then compare and contrast the narrative you are writing to these essays. What revisions would make your personal narrative essay more interesting? more likely to be considered outstanding work? Your assignment is to incorporate those
revisions.
Wed. Oct 9 Final draft of narrative essay is due. Also, in pocket folder turn in your invention activities, outline, first draft and the
narrative essay peer review sheet. Discuss cause and effect including the following terms: primary vs., secondary causes, immediate vs. remote causes,and primary vs. secondary consequences. Homework: assigned reading for Thursday ch 8 Cause and Consequence Analysis
